Lucie Radcliffe
Founder of Lucie Bakes

Hey it’s Lucie here from @lucie.bakes

What did you have for Breakfast this morning?
It’s not a regular occurrence but I actually ate cookies for breakfast today — just a few pieces of mini almond biscotti with my morning cup of coffee! I also can’t resist adding flavoured creamer to my coffee too!

How long have you been Cake Decorating for?
I started experimenting with cake decorating years ago actually, long before I ever started posting to Instagram, and long before I ever tried to decorate a royal icing cookie! But when I eventually started my Instagram page, it was exclusively cookies; only recently did I start playing with cake decorating again! It’s really fun to change things up and try new techniques/styles, and as much as I love decorating cookies, I also love pushing my creative abilities and trying other sugary mediums!

Why did you choose Cake Decorating?
If it’s made of sugar, I want to try making it! I have a massive, sweet tooth (or, more like all my teeth lol!) and a background in fine arts and graphic design, so it just made sense to me to combine baking and art!

In times of doubt, what do you do to get back into your creative zone?
Whenever I see a pattern, design, shape, or picture of something I love, I’ll snap a picture of it, or take a screenshot, but eventually it gets lost in my camera roll. So, whenever I’m feeling creatively lost, I peruse my photo album for images I’ve completely forgotten about! I also love browsing Pinterest for cool patterns, posters, sketches, recipes ideas and more…

Where did you learn your Cake Decorating skills?
I’m fully self-taught!! Everything I’ve learned has been from YouTube tutorials and other Instagram bakers’ pages. And a lot of practice, trial, and error!

What is your typical day like, what does it entail?
It’s always a mix of things. I’m constantly running back and forth between my kitchen and office. I spend my days (and often well into the nights) managing my 3D printers, packaging and shipping Cookie Cutter orders, hosting livestream cookie decorating classes, and baking up a storm!

We know Edible Art Paint is a medium you use, what do you love about it?
The Metallics! The metallic paints are a staple in my cake/cookie decorating process. They’re so easy to use, less messy than powders/dusts, and the colour options and coverage is beautiful.

What is your #1 piece of advice for the newbies in Cake Decorating?
Invest in some proper cake decorating tools – like a turntable and straight icing scraper – having the proper tools are so helpful when comes to achieving your desired results!! And tons of practice, I cannot overestimate the importance of practice!

Who is your inspiration in the Cake Decorating world?
I love @inspiredtotaste, @sashacakeschicago and @sugargreekshow. Everything they post is so beautiful and unique.

Who is your inspiration out of the Cake Decorating world?
Oh my –  I don’t think I could list just 3 individuals outside of the baking world. There are so many. Generally, I find a lot of inspiration in early 20th century art styles (like Art Deco, Art Nouveau, arts & crafts movement), anything Disney, pop culture icons and pop culture people. I I love creating portrait cookies too!
