Betts
MAGNOLIA KITCHEN

Hi, I’m Betts, the gal behind @magnoliakitchen

What did you have for breakfast this morning?
Coffee always

How long have you been Cake Decorating for?
I like to think it’s been 18yrs as that’s how old my daughter is, BUT actually since starting Magnolia Kitchen and official job title it’s been 9yrs

Why did you choose Cake Decorating?
I love art and I love baking so it seemed natural to combine the two, also love the compliments haha

In times of doubt, what do you do to get back into your creative zone?
I try not to pressure myself to be creative, if I’m not feeling in the zone I know I will be able to see that in the finished product. I try to relax and not overthink it and let it flow.

Where did you learn your Cake Decorating skills?
The internet, google, youtube, making it up as I go along.

What is your typical day like, what does it entail?
Very different these days. As Magnolia Kitchen grows I find myself more of a business women than a cake decorator and that is okay. For me that shows the progress in my business growth. I still love to get stuck into caking as it is still my passion and its nice to treat it as a passion again.
Day: kid drop off, get to work, COFFEE, catch up with staff, emails, product development, social media, kids, dinner, binge tv or binge read, bed, REPEAT!

We know Edible Art Paint is a medium you use, what do you love about it?
I have been part of the Edible Art Paint fan club since before it even existed so one could argue that I am the original number 1 fan. Before Edible Art Paints there wasn’t anything like it on the market. I love its versatility, the fact it works on chocolate, it dries well, the range of colours are incredible, it works awesome over so many sweet surfaces, it can be used as a solid colour or thinned and blended as a water colour style. Also I LOVE MIRANDA!

What is your #1 piece of advice for the newbies in Cake Decorating?
Find your niche, it’s great to follow heaps of amazing cake decorators for inspiration but it’s important to take inspiration from other things in life such as fashion, art, architecture, nature, etc. I talk about this a-lot in my new book Magnolia Kitchen Design out 3rd November 2020 (shameless self promotion)

Who is your inspiration in the Cake Decorating world?
