Amanda Spencer

Hi, I’m Amanda, check out my work at @paintingwithbuttercream

What did you have for breakfast this morning?
A protein shake and toast. Ya I am pretty boring!

How long have you been Cake Decorating for?
I will have hit my year mark on February 9th, 2020

Why did you choose Cake Decorating?
I am a stay at home mom of four kids but have always had some type of creative outlet for myself like painting, sewing, etc. I was feeling the need to try something new and discover a new talent. That is when I started scrolling on Instagram and couldn’t believe the art that I saw on some of the cakes that were posted. I knew I wanted to try it for myself. I sat with an Amazon cart full of cake decorating items and called a friend to ask if I was crazy! She lovingly told me to got for it and the rest is history!!

In times of doubt, what do you do to get back into your creative zone?
The creative zone is something I work on all the time. I try to find inspiration in anything and everything around me. I really enjoy searching for work by abstract artists and you can never discredit a good Pinterest scroll! Whenever I find I am in a slump, I always set aside some time to really get inspired again. With inspiration comes motivation!

Where did you learn your Cake Decorating skills?
For me, I am completely self taught. My skills come from A LOT of trial and error and figuring things out. If I don’t understand a concept, or if a skill I am working on is failing, I will typically head to YouTube or other creators pages for help. I actually remember crying and feeling defeated in my kitchen when the 28th batch of macarons I had worked so hard on were completely ruined. I totally could have given up but I was so determined I just kept going. I read more articles, watched more videos and am now proud to say, I have conquered those finicky little cookies!

What is your typical day like, what does it entail?
First and foremost I am a mom so my day is probably just as crazy as most other moms out there. First I wake up at 5:45am to go to the gym and exercise. This is my time and yes, I know it’s early but I love to get up and get a good start to my day. Then, I come home and make breakfast and get all the kiddos up for school. We are usually running out of the house like crazy people, once again late, around 8:45am. Then, my day is filled with baking, decorating, true crime podcast listening, and entertaining my three year old son. He is my shadow and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Next, is school pickup, chores, and off to extracurricular activities. This is when I become a taxi driver! Cheer practice, wrestling, football, baseball… you name it and we are probably heading there. Then, I get to fix a nice dinner where we sit and all eat together. This is my favorite time of the day. Lastly, comes my least favorite time of the day… bedtime. My husband is actually the champ at this so I usually let him take the lead. Afterwards, I sit and chat with the hubby, read my scriptures, and then finally get to bed around 10:30 just to start the day all over again!

We know Edible Art Paint is a medium you use, what do you love about it?
Edible Art Paint has changed how I view cake decorating completely. It gives artists, like myself, the opportunity to actually paint on a cake! I love how easily I can use it alongside buttercream when creating my designs. It just opens up a whole world of possibilities that I am so excited about! I love that you can even mix them together to get the perfect color. My cakes have now become my canvas!

What is your #1 piece of advice for the newbies in Cake Decorating?
I know it’s cliche but just keep trying!! Decorating is filled with so many different techniques and skills and you don’t have to be perfect at them right away. We tend to be so hard on ourselves when in reality, it is just amazing that you are trying something new and working to better yourself! Start with the basics and perfect those while always trying new things!

Who is your inspiration in the Cake Decorating world?
Oh wow this is a hard question because there are SO many amazing cake designers out there. I went and looked on my saved section in Instagram titled “inspiration” and the top three for decorating would have to be:
10 Bloom Cakes @10bloomcakes
Cynthia Irani @cynthiairanidesign
Buttercream Bakery @buttercream_bakery
I am going to throw Sheri Wilson @sheri_wilson_ and Sugar and Sparrow @sugarandsparrowco in there too because these account are what I first found that got me excited to start decorating cakes!

Who is your inspiration in the Cake Decorating world?
Floral Wallpapers on Pinterest
Artists such as: Deann Art, Melissa Lyon Art, and Ettavee
I am in nature all the time and always find inspiration there!
