Rosie Dummer

Hi, I’m Rosie, check out my work at @rosiecakediva

What did you have for breakfast this morning?
Porridge! Good old fashioned porridge!

How long have you been Cake Decorating for?
Badly all my life….but the improvement has probably been in the last 10 years.

Why did you choose Cake Decorating?
I think Cake Decorating chose me! 4 kids and lots of birthdays gave me lots of practice.

In times of doubt, what do you do to get back into your creative zone?
Have a cup of tea and hit google. Especially art images.

Where did you learn your Cake Decorating skills?
I’m all self-taught. Lots of online searching and learning from my mistakes.

What is your typical day like, what does it entail?
I don’t think I have a typical day. Sometimes I’m planning and sometimes I’m making cakes. Sometimes I’m working on tutorials or filming for TV. Sometimes I’m giving talks and presentations. I am often travelling. A LOT. I guess it’s true that variety is the spice of life. Mine is very spicy!

We know Edible Art Paint is a medium you use, what do you love about it?
It is the first product that you can literally use as paint on cakes. It is so versatile and has so many more applications than previous mediums. I have used it on the cakes I am most proud of and I honestly I don’t think I could have made them with other products.

What is your #1 piece of advice for the newbies in Cake Decorating?
My #1 piece of advice is get your consistency right. Whether it’s buttercream, royal icing or fondant you are working with, consistency is everything. Start simple and learn how different products behave and how the climate effects them and you will save yourself from potential disasters.

Who is your inspiration in the Cake Decorating world?
Marta Hidalgo (Peccata Minuta), Karen Portaleo and I love Kek Couture.

Who is your inspiration in the Cake Decorating world?
Outside of the Cake Decorating world I have one person who totally humbles me and that is Ravi Singh who runs the charity Khalsa Aid and took me to Iraq to see the work they are doing out there with the Yazidi women. Watching someone that charismatic in action is truly humbling. I’m also obsessed with Emmeline Pankhurst who led the suffragette movement and was way ahead of her time in terms of making use of team building and branding to build a movement and make a difference. And my ultimate inspiration is my Mum, who must have given me my drive and passion for creativity.
